Aussie Pubs

Hotels here are called pubs which is wierd but I just go with it. In the country away from the bigger towns they offer great value accomodation some places will give you a meal and room for the night for $25 which is a good deal. Some of them go one better with free camping out the back. I suppose they hope to get more customers in to buy food and beer and no doubt it works.

Today I passed through Rockhampton and into the tropical part of Queensland. Surprisingly even though the Tropic of CApricorn is about 6 miles south of the town there is no indication of passing it. They have a tourist information area with a monument showing the north and south side of the tropic right next to a map clearly indicating its outside of town. Outside of town would be bad for business so whats a few miles really :) Some of the people that I was with on the Fraser adventure were going to the Whitsundays for another three day sailing trip. Figuring that I was making good enough time to meet them there decided to join in on the action, better to do it with some people I already new and had a blast with before.

As the sun was sinking low I arrived to a town called Marlborough which had signs offering free camping behind the pub. It was like a moth and a flame, even though it was properly dark I kept going the last few km’s hoping they had showers too. I was not disappointed, $2 the fee for a shower. I think pubs will be getting more frequent visits from me in future.
