Traveling Chef

I’d been given a nice wake up thanks to that spider and wasn’t too keen to hang around that spot in case of anymore surprises. I broke camp in record time and got the hell out of there, didn’t stop until I found a rest area where I had a massive bowl of porridge as usual for breakfast. Cooking is a slow job with my cooker, its good for heating a bit of water but beyond that things get complicated.

Cooking rice or pasta takes a while and it means I have to keep the meals simple. The cooker does a good job but if you want something else you have to cook it seperately and either way one part goes cold. The frying pan is great I do sausages and some mince on that and then slice it up and mix it into the nearly cooked main carbo-loaded food. I’d accumulated quite a selection of herbs and spices but they were stolen from a hostel about a week ago along with my tea and chupa chups. I wasn’t too happy about that – I hope the bugger who took my food chokes on it – but at the moment I’m back to having the essentials like paprika, curry powder, thyme, oregano. and a few others. With some cheese, tomatoes, capsicum (bell peppers) and brocolli I’m not eating badly at all. My options are limited though, potatoes are out of the question and it’s killing me. Mash from a packet just doesn’t do it. I’m probably not getting enough veg in the meals, its hard to get small enough portions for one meal only but I’m eating lots of fruit. Kiwis, pears, apples, mandarins are all very cheap and easy to get hold of everywhere so far. Two pears in a bowl of oats in the morning is very tasty.

I’m feeling pretty good, even after 5 or 6 days of almost constant riding I’m not feeling too tired anymore. I think I may in fact be getting somewhat fit! My average speed has definitely picked up from the first week too, although that could be due to there being less hills on my current route…
