Normanton
After leaving Croydon the only thing I saw all day before getting to Normanton was the Cumberland chimney, the last remains of an old smelter and that was just a few km’s from the town. The rest of the day was just spinning happily along.
As I was pulling into Normanton I met Dai again on his way out. I’d had a late enough start because I’d stayed up ’til after midnight chatting to some other campers on their way to Darwin so I was surprised to see him again so soon. I wandered about town for a bit, went to the railway museum, got some more food but no milk or bread which all the stores were out of. This is wierd, when was the last time you were in a town of 1500 and not been able to get milk or bread?
After it got dark I left town to bush camp along the road, $16 is more than the campsite is worth. It was actually nice riding at night, the moon was out, the winds had died down and it was a lot cooler. This could be the way to travel in future I think, especially when it gets hotter in the summer months.
