The Devils Marbles
Our little mob left Tennant Creek bright and early to roll down to the Devils Marbles. It was just going to be 105km so we were in no rush on the road and took our sweet time. We got there about 12 and wandered about for a bit before heading to the campsite. The reserve is small and a few hours is all it takes to see it all. I had planned on going back to Tennant Creek but decided to stay the night there instead.
We met a Swedish guy there and hung out with him. In the evening, we got a blazing campfire going ang sat around eating dinner and drinking tea. I went through a three litre bottle of water just making tea – not all for me mind. For sunset we dragged our bikes to the top of a large boulder and got some cool silhouttes. It was very serene and tranquil there, sat among the rocks watching the sun set, and again to watch the sun rise in the morning. We took lots of pictures, some good but none really doing justice to the place.
In the morning our three man group dispersed, Dai south towards Alice Springs, Aurelien was staying to have a rest day and I was headed North for Darwin. Alice and Uluru are pretty close but it would take the bones of two weeks to go down and come back up again and that was time I’m not willing to risk. When the rain starts falling up top the roads may be impassible and I don’t want that.
On the way down we saw the wierdest insect I’ve ever seen. I cycled past what I thought was a gumtree leaf but it moved just as I passed it, and saw it move again when Dai went by so I swung around to take a closer look. I’ve no idea what it was, neither did the other two. It arched its tail like a scorpion and spread its wings occasionally but I don’t think it could fly. It couldn’t walk very well either. If it is a new species I name it buggus pushbikerus (they use latin names for species right?) in honour of the cyclists who found it
