Katherine

After snorkelling and breakfast they set out for Kakadu and I rolled towards Katherine. It was only 100km away so there was no worries having a late start. I rolled into Katherine in the late afternoon and found a cheap backpackers called Coco’s.

Aurelien, the Frenchy doing the Water Aid charity ride told me about Coco’s. Apparently cyclist are welcomed with open arms and there is a folder with lots of diary entries, tips, advice, places to see, where to find water all by cyclists for cyclists. So I now have a list of all water sources along the route from Katherine to Port Hedland which promises to be a very tough part of my journey, particularly between Broome and Port Hedland. I stayed just the one night in Katherine, not going to Nitmiluk National Park, instead pressing north toards Kakadu. I plan on doing a kayak trip in Nitmiluk, maybe two or three days on my way back before I turn westward.

The Mango season starts pretty soon in Katherine so I may get a job here when I get back after visiting Kakadu, Litchfield and Darwin. The rain hasn’t started falling yet but you can see more and more clouds in the sky everyday so it is getting closer. I can’t wait to see some massive electrical storms. Darwin has more lightning strike than anywhere else on earth or so I’ve been told. It’s going to be spectacular I hope :)
