The Road North
I headed north from Albany along Chesters Pass Road. The name of the road had my hopes up that there would be a hill or two to tackle. The reality was that the road barely rose above an almost flat gradient even passing right at the foot of the tallest peak in Western Australia. When I actually got to the foot of Bluff Knoll a big bank of clouds appeared ruining my planned hike to the top.
After pressing on past the Stirling Ranges the landscape continued to be pretty much flat endless wheatfields. As fas as the eye could see, nothing but wheat. Sometime in the evening I set up camp at the top of a hill. I turned on my mobile to set the alarm for the morning and was surprised when a text came through. The phone displays the cell you are connected to and from the hilltop was able to connect to a cell over 100km away as the crow flies. The signal was flaky and I couldn’t quite get my voicemail but I was able to send a few texts. Strange the really mundane things that stand out somedays…
