The road to Fraser Island

Hervey Bay was just about 160km away so figured two or three nice easy days to get there would be ok. Whatever the physiotherapist did it was working, I could pedal without too much pain so I left Gagaju bound for Gympie about 70km off. I was a little paranoid that I might ruin my whole trip so I took things very very gingerly mindful of how I was pedalling.

Soon enough I was riding at normal pace though, the discomfort was not too bad at all and after about 4 hours in the saddle its a different part of the anatomy that starts to dominate the thoughts :) I was keeping to quiet back roads adding a few km’s to the distance but they were lovely and quiet. I got to Gympie and pushed on another bit feeling that it would be ok. That night I camped at the back of a service station where they offered a bottomless mug of tea for $2.40. They also said it was cool if I sat in the cafe area and watch TV. I think they may be rethinking the bottomless mug of tea now. I was there for a few hours and got a refill every 15 minutes at least :)

Next day I made it to Hervey Bay without too much drama. I passed a field of pineapples in the morning and scabbed one from one of the workers. I’d no idea the pineapples grew in little bushes about 2 feet high, whatever the case it was delicious and there was juice everywhere! I must have looked a right piggy sitting on the side of the road eating an entire pineapple with a penknife! The last few km’s to the hostel were really tough, straight into a strong wind which had me heroically grinding out 10km/h in my granny gear. Still I got there intact and checked into a nice place and booked a tour to Fraser Island which included a few free night accomodation.
