Undara Lava Tubes

Lava Tubes

Next morning we went the 30km or so to see the Undara Lava Tubes. For $40, we got a 2-hour tour of the largest lava tube formation in the world. Sounds exciting but the lava stopped flowing about 190,000 years ago after spewing out 23 cubic kilometers of lava through the series of tunnels. What was left was a series of caves which we went exploring.

The tour consisted of lots of fact and science with most of the important stuff left to your imagination. I was hoping to see some imitation lava pouring through a tunnel but alas it was not the case. I have a vivid imagination though so I had no trouble visualising it in my head. Honestly it was a waste of money, kind of cool but should really only cost just a few bucks for whats you get.

When that was over I went on a few signed bushwalks around the area and after lunch struck out for Mt. Surprise where I could get a cold drink. One mornings riding west of the tableland and already the climate was changing. It was significantly warmer and drier. At this stage I was wearing a wool base layer and a winter cycletop, the intention being to get used to being hot for when it really will get hot!
