The Nullarbor Beckons

A long way away
A log way away

Leaving Kalgoorlie behind me (I wonder what else I could score if I hung around) I hit the road south towards Norseman and the start of the Eyre Highway across the Nullarbor. The road south was nice, it was stinking hot but there was a stiff crosswind which kept me somewhat cool. Tomorrow when the road turns eastwards this wind will be in my face, so I’ll enjoy it whilst I can.

Norseman is about 190km south of Kalgoorlie and I didn’t exactly have an early start (I needed to top up my bodies tea reserves). I cruised through the streets of Kalgoorlie-Boulder taking lots of diversions on my way towards the Superpit on the edge of town. It’s one of the largest open cut goldmines in the world and it is a big, big hole in the ground, 330m deep and getting deeper. The tipper trucks driving around there weigh in at a measly 480 tonnes fully loaded but from the lookout they a like little Tonka trucks.

After staring at the big toys long enough to satisfy my inner child I pedalled on out of town. That evening I stopped up about 50km short of Norseman. I could have made it to town but I saw a nice campspot and I didn’t need all that much convincing to stop for the day. Turns out there was another couple with their campervan hidden in the bush behind me that evening. We chatted for a while but the mozzies were going to town on me and I had to retreat to my tent. Suddenly I’m a very attractive dinner for them again after weeks without them bothering me. I wonder why? At least they don’t cause huge blisters anymore.
