Adelaide here we come
The ride south into Adelaide wasn’t bad but it was not an enjoyable ride. There was a lot of traffic and it was windy as hell. It should really have taken two reasonable days riding but the wind was so strong and it was a struggle taking an extra half day.
The road isn’t really suited for riding bikes though. It was mostly a dual carriageway which you’d think would be better than a two-lane highway but its not ideal. The problem is that on dual carriageways here there is no shoulder to ride on, so I have to take a lane and the traffic squeezes by much closer than usual. It means there were some nervy moments along the way but I survived unscathed.
Along the way down to Adelaide I passed thought a few sleepy little towns, just tiny diversions from the highway but sometimes you can be surprised. There is a place called Snowtown of all things. Maybe they were being facetious but I doubt the place has ever seen snow. Anyhow in this town where I didn’t see a single person on the streets there was a cool little cafe. In an effort to drum up business they even posted the menu on the inside of the public toilets. It worked on me so I went to have a look. It had just opened and honestly wouldn’t be out of place along the Esplanade in Cairns – quite what it as doing here I’m not sure. Whatever the reasons I managed to restrain myself from going nuts – the food looked great – and just had a a divine vanilla malt shake. If you’re passing this place on your way from or to Adelaide you could do a lot worse than make the little detour for a treat.
Another one was a place called Dublin. My phone displays the name of the cell that it is connected to and as I was turning on my phone to set the alarm and Dublin came up on screen. I was half asleep at the time, I thought I was imagining it. It was basically just a pub and fuel station called Dublin. The town sign even has a dancing leprechaun! I eventually reached the northern edge of Adelaide in the morning which was a relief. The roads were still busy but instead of squeezing past at 110km/h they were only doing it at 50km/h – much better.
