Setting off
So finally with all my equipment in place, the time for procrastination was over. After an early photoshoot for the emotional ladies who were afraid that I’ll never be seen again I set off. The departure from Sydney was sweet, I was able to get a lift with Ghosty out of Sydney avoiding the pleasant task of pushing the bike up and down the steps of the harbour bridge.
Out against the morning traffic towards Windsor was actaully a nice ride. Having checked out the routes out of the city prior to that morning I missed the worst of the roads and traffic. The old Putty road was my first choice of route out of Sydney, a twisty line I saw on the map throught Wollembi National Park seeming like a nice option. It gave no idication of the severity of some of the climbs I ws to face. By lunch time I was tired and frustrated. Only 6 hours out and I’d already had to true the rear wheel, with all the nipples having come loose and 3 punctures before lunch time. Not sure what happened to the wheel but the amount of broken glass on the road beggars belief!
Later that afternoon as I was scouting for a good place to camp for the night a 4×4 come flying around the corner behind me a screaming to a stop all wheels locked up in front of me. The driver, Col, tosses a can of rum and coke my way saying he saw my on his way into Sydney that morning and figured I was in need of a drink. He invited me back to his for the evening and I gladly accepted. So we tied the bike on the back and headed of to his farm – a mere 10,000 acres. After a guided tour of his ‘estate’ we headed back to the house and after dinner he insisted that I watch Wolf Creek. As the movie went on I was looking at Col and his girlfriend Peta with more and more suspicion, wondering what was actually in the food I was eating!!! I was relieved to wake up in the morning where I went to sleep. I got a matress on the floor beside the fire for the night which was sweet, much more comfy and warm than a tent in the woods so after a crap morning it turned into a good day.
