A World-Record perhaps?
At a Roadhouse near Daly Waters I stopped to get a cold drink. A German guy wanders over and starts chatting to me about my bike and travels and says he is travelling by bike too. He invited me to come over to his tent for a chat so I did. I was going to go to the oldest pub in the N.T. but this guy looked near 60 so I figured he’d have some stories to tell.
Boy was I right, it just so happens that this German is Klaus Höhle travelling around the world with his wife Doris. The man is 67, his wife just 54 and since March thay have ridden across Europe, through the Middle-East including Iran and Pakistan (where they had 2 armed units ensureing their safe passage through the country), down into India and through South-East Asia to Indonesia where they went onto Darwin. Thats about 18,000km in 7 months which isn’t too bad really. If they complete their trip around the world which they reckon could take two and a half years they’ll be in the world records as the oldest couple to circumnavigate the globe on bike.
I also met a Swiss man in the middle of the night a few weeks back. He was 63 cycling from Perth to Darwin, doing all his riding at night to avoid the heat and the worst of the winds. I hope I’m still as strong as these guys when I’m that old. So to all you who think you can’t do it, nothing like some pensioners doing it to prove otherwise.
