Kangaroo Rock Art

Next day I went to Nourlangie to see some Aboriginal rock painting. It opens between 8am and sunset everyday but the barrier doesn’t stop a bicycle so I had the place completely to myself for over an hour. There was something almost magical about the place, seeing where people used to live for 30,000 years ago, seeing the art they used to tell stories and keep track of their past history.

Lots of people told me that Kakadu was nothing special, that there is nothing there that you can’t see better someplace else like Litchfield. But I think that they missed the point of Kakadu. Sure the scenery may not be as spectacular as other places in the country but thats not why I think it is so amazing. Despite the resorts and the paved roads Kakadu feels almost untouched by man. I was there at the end of the tourist season so there were not so many people about. On some of the bushwalks I didn’t see a single other person, and it was the same at some of the campsites I stayed at.

I can’t wait to go back, maybe after the wet season when all the floodplains are still full of water. And next time I want a better mode of transport more suitable for the rougher tracks.
