Cape Range & Ningaloo National Parks
Next day I was heading out to check my emails. I was just leaving my room and what do I see parked right outside my building only the Veggie Van. Alex was a little surprised to see my walk up judging from her ‘You bast#!d, you rode here already!’ So we hung out for the rest of the evening. We cooked dinner – I contributed some peppers than waited for a meal to magically appear – and stayed up late chatting with some others at the hostel, a bull rider being among them.
I had planned on leaving the next morning towards Coral Bay but the girls were going to Cape Range Park and had space for my stuff in their van so I went snorkeling with them instead. I only went as far as the tip of the cape on my bike, it would have been a 120km round trip to do some snorkeling but being able to get down there in a van made it worth the effort. The morning of our departure we had a false start at 5am due to some boring reason but did get going at 8 instead.
On the way to Turquoise Bay which has some of the best snorkelling in Ningaloo Reef we stopped off at the Lighthouse. Got some pretty good views of the Indian Ocean and the reef surrounding Vlamingh Head. Shortly afterwards we were at Turquoise Bay. As it was relatively early in the morning we were the only people there when we arrived. I tried the water but there were some strong currents and I wasn’t too happy about that – they were going straight out to sea. Eventually later in the afternnon after seeing loads of little kids having lots of fun I got it too and boy was it worth it. It was fantastic, I saw turtles – hurrah, stonefish, scorpionfish, sea cucumbers, wrasse and lots of others as well as all the coral. Literally got 15m from the beach and you’re right on the coral, its really good.
I had planned on getting back to Exmouth but I was enjoying another day relaxing and taking it easy on the beach so I stayed for the night. It was hard to believe but that night with the wind coming in from the sea it actually got cold. For the first time in months I was cold! I needed a sleeping bag that night too, it was so nice snuggling up in the bag on the sand just a few metres from the water. This is the life! It was fun hanging out with Alex and Karina but next morning I was gone at dawn with nary a goodbye, I had a huge day planned 230km to Coral Bay from here. The way things are going though I’m pretty sure we’ll see each other on the road again.
