Wave Rock
My route north was taing me past Hyden and a chance to see Wave Rock. Wave Rock is a peculiar formation on a granite monolith caused by some pretty unique erosion. The Wave Rock is over 100m in length and 15m tall. It looks really like a giant wave just about to crash hence the name. There are lots of other places that have similar erosion on the rock face but none that looks quite so spectacularly huge.
At Hyden the caravan park were charging what can only be described as extortionate fees – $21 for one person to pitch a tent. Not that I was going to stay there, further along the road to the north there was another monolith with some more interesting features. It is also home to Mulka’s cave, a giant aboriginal who according to legend was cross eyed and because he could not hunt animals properly ate children instead. If the cave was good enough for a child eater then it was good enough for me and I rolled out my sleping bag here for the night.
On the two days from the Stirling Ranges to Hyden I passed through more flat wheatfield country. I had some friendly wind for a change which was nice and managed to make decent progress with pretty short days. I have been nursing a little injury so I’m taking it a easier than normal.
