Across the Eyre Peninsula

On the Highway to Hell!
Highway to Hell

I had some wheel trouble again. I’m not all that surprised that after the pounding it took along the road and especially since the rim failure that some spokes are on their last legs. I’ve been checking all the spokes in the morning before I set off and this morning I found a broken one. So I set up my mobile workshop in the town park.

Dust Storms!

Poor visibility
Poor visibility

I had the interesting experience of riding through a dust storm today. The temperature was in the mid 40′s and the wind was whipping up dust so thick visibility was down to 300m. Ceduna was just down the road but by the time I made it into town at 11am I was so dirty I looked like I’d had a mud bath!

Windy wind

Interesting concept
Interesting, does it work?

After the long haul across the Nullarbor the road leads into Ceduna, the first town in almost 1300km. It has been pretty windy the last few days but today it was crazy. The temperature was higher than it has been in a few days too so progress was slow.

The true treeless plain, 15km long?

February 15th, 2007 by Ross
Nullarbor Treeless Plain
Nullarbor Treeless Plain

Leaving the Cliffs the road turns inland again and onto the true part of the treeless plain. Most of the Nullarbor Plain is inland and the road only cuts through a short section of the treeless part. This bit is just about 15km long and then the road starts to change again. At fist some little bushes and then a few ‘trees’ here and there.

Next Stop Antarctica
Next stop Antarctica!

Once past the border at Eucla and into South Australia the road moves closer to the coast. The road goes back up to the Hampton Tablelands from the Roebuck Plain. The bluff was a constant feature on my left side for the last two days from Madura Pass to the Eucla Pass but now it is flat as far as the eye can see again.

Is nearly 4000km a long way to go for repairs?

Hitching to Perth
Hitching to Perth

The rear wheel gave out in just about the worst place in the whole country. It was a long way to go for repairs in either direction. Thinking about it and the fact that it turned into a 3950km two week epic makes it seem a bit extreme but it was a lot of fun too. With ‘that’ one exception it was one of the highlights of the trip so far.

On the road again

Roadside art?
Roadside art?

After my little delay of nearly two weeks I’m back on the road again. I think I did a good job trueing the wheel, I reckon it’s less than 1mm from being perfectly true which isn’t too bad using your thumb as a guide! Anyhow I’m back rolling again on across the Eyre Highway and happy to be going again.

Damn thief!!!!

February 10th, 2007 by Ross

It was late afternoon when I made it to Kal and after chatting to a few guys I’d met the previous visits decided to hang around for the night. We had a BBQ that night and once again there was as much food as I could eat. But that night some scum stole some of my stuff.

Happy Birthday to me
Happy Birthday to me!

It’s was a good trip with Jamie, Laura and Seb. I cooked up a storm for dinner, sausages, beans and mashed potatoes afterwhich they surprised me on my birthday with a cake and marshmallows marking out the small number of years that have passed since my entrance onto this plane of existance.
